Food Inc

Last night I finally sat down and watched the movie Food Inc ( you can watch the trailer here). You should be able to get it at your local video store or library. I must admit, I put off watching it for awhile as I knew, but didn’t really want to know, know what I mean!!
If you haven’t seen it yet and your food and your health are a priority, then I highy recommend watching it!!
We are worth it!!!
So run, don’t walk to your video store or library to get this video and watch it. Make your health a top priority by knowing what you eat!!  This is another reason to support your local farmers!!

Why Organic???

You are what you eat and your skin is the largest organ of the body, everything you eat makes a difference and everything you put on your skin gets absorbed into the bloodstream.  For me, if I am going to eat healthy& raw, I want it to be organic as often as possible, and I want to put healthy organic products on my skin as well.

WHY????

We already get exposed to enough toxic chemicals and if we have a chance to reduce that, why not??

Foods and products that are organic are not gentically modified (GMO), don’t have pesiticides, herbicides and other chemicals.  These chemcials are detrimental to your health and are usually cancer causing.

Organic foods and products reduces overall toxins in your body further increasing your health and vitality. They are more nutritious, safer, have more vitamins and minerals and are better tasting.

I find everytime I go to the store and try and find a safe, healthy or organic product, reading the labels is quite amusing to say the least!!  I don’t know what the guidelines are but to put on the labels nautral or organic and to find out they still have toxic chemcials in them is frustrating.

These are some foods that have high amounts of pesticides, growth hormones, antibiotics etc

– beef, chicken & pork

– dairy

– strawberries, raspberries and cherries

– apples and pears

– tomatoes

– spinach and salad greens

– peaches and nectarines

– coffee

– potatoes

– grapes (imported from Chile)

– celery

– peppers red and green

Organic may be more expensive, but for me, I feel it’s worth it.  A good way of getting fresh, organic and usally well priced produce is through your local organic farmer or at farmer’s markets.

Looking for organic skin and body care products?? Look no further, these have been the best I have found globally.

Nut Pate

There are lots of different nut pates out there, and maybe this has been done before, but here is one that I made the other night when I was having a bunch of ladies over and it went over very well, and it was quick and easy to make!!

Nut Pate

1 1/2 cup sunflower seeds, and I did soak these for about 2 hours before hand

put in processor and mixed a bit

Added in 1/4 water to start (may need to add more depending on the consistency)

1 – 2 garlic cloves

juice of 1 lemon

1/2 tsp sea salt

Mix well together.

Now, I had just made pesto in my processor and there was still some left in the processor, so I added about 1 tbsp of pesto, the nut pate did have a greenish color to it, but the taste was great.

I then put in on some raw crackers that I had made, with a little bit of pesto and a piece of black olive and they were scrumptious!!

The crackers that I made for this came out of the book Ani’s Raw Food Kitchen: Easy, Delectable Living Foods Recipes
I just dehydrated these longer and scored them smaller to make crackers instead more like a bread.

Our Food

In our local grocery stores there are isles  and isles of ‘food’, over 47 000 items actually, but how much of it is really food????

As I have become more and more aware over the years, have tried to eat healthier, I have made a rule to myself to keep things simple when I have boughten package foods ( before I became raw and of course with teenagers now!!).

I use the KISS method, you know, Keep It Simple Silly, or Sweetheart of whatever you would like:)!!

Here are my guidelines that I follow……

–  If I have to learn ‘swaheli’ (is there really such a language??), just to learn how to pronounce the words, then I didn’t buy it!

– If I had to carry a dictionnary around to look up the word (and there really is no such thing as some of these words aren’t there!),  then I didn’t buy it and why is it so hard to find out what some of these words are, like the dozen or so different names for MSG????

–  If it has a shelf life longer than my dog’s life, another NO!

I kept it pretty simple, and for anyone starting out and going Raw is just to radical, just try these simple rules.  I will post again on where you can then proceed from keeping it simple to even eliminating more and still keeping it simple.

Eating healthy shouldn’t be complicated or hard, it’s just like learning how to ride a bike, it’s something new, but over time, the choices get easier and clearer and you will feel the benefits of it!!

You will probably also start to notice that you won’t be going down as many isles for so called ‘food’!!

Raw Hummus


Raw Hummus

I love hummus, have always eaten lots of it, so when I came across a recipe for raw, I got excited.

The original recipe I found used zuchini, but what I found it was inconsistent as far as consistentcy.  Then I found another one with cashews which is nice but sometimes it nice to get more veggies in, so what I have done is combined them both.

I start with 2 smaller size zuchini

then I add the rest of the ingredients like regular hummus, and I have to admit, I am terrrible for measurements, I always do it for taste, but here goes!

juice of 1/2 to 1 lemon

1-2 garlic cloves

sea salt to taste

1 tablespoon raw tahini

blend it all in a processor,  now sometimes it will be too  soft, so then I add cashews till I get the texture that I want

maybe up to 1 cup.

You can eat right away or let sit for more flavor.

New Direction

Hi there,

If ever you have stopped by my blog here or earlier at my other location, you will notice that I have switched directions…….yes we are allowed to do that!!!

I have to admit, I have been ignoring all the signs that I should have bee paying attention to in my life and trying to do things that I thought I should do or would bring me more money, but it never felt right or comfortable.

Yes, I have a business with my husband that I enjoy doing and we are getting rather good at it, but this is the essence of me…….this is my passions that I cannot deny any longer, so I’ve decided to make it my focus in my spare time and maybe one day it will be my where I spend my full time!!

Getting Started in Raw Foods

What is Raw Foods?

– uncooked – it’s not heated above 118F / 42C

– it’s fresh and unprocessed

– organic as much as possible

Why not cooked foods?

Cooked foods actually destroys all the vitamins, nutrients, minerals, oxygen rich & enzymes which is the life force or ’spark of life’. It becomes dead food, then we need to supplement with usually factory processed vitamins etc and we are then just eating for the sake of eating and not living.  We are all born with enzymes, when we eat cooked foods we diminsh our supply of them as it takes enzymes to help digest our food, so with cooked foods, our bodies are using up our stores of enzymes, that is why we feel sluggish and tired after eating a cooked meal, it takes our energy.  When we eat raw foods, we feel good as the food comes with enzymes and can be digested much easier.

Raw foods are more alkalining which is highly beneficial for our bodies.  Acidic foods create an acidic environment which is much better for creating disease.

It’s also better for the planet – no pesiticides, herbicides or other chemicals, so we are helping to contribute to a better, safer planet.

There are differences in raw food diets as you will see when you are researching them, some will use some ingredients like Bragg’s or Tamari and some won’t. Some will use raw milk or cheese, some won’t, some are into very simple foods and recipes and some are into more elegant raw cusine, some are 60%, or 80% or 100% raw.  It’s finding out what works for you, and where you are starting at and your health – everyone is different.  There is so much variation and that can be confusing or overwhelming at first, remember to have some fun with it too, and don’t be hard on yourself when starting out, we all transition differently.

What’s your why??

When starting with raw foods or anything for that matter, be clear on you why.  Is it to be healthier, loss weight, whatever it is, when you are clear about your why, it will be easier to stick to it!!

Kitchen tools to have

All you really need to get yourself started, besides enthusiasm is some good knives, a good blender and a processor.  I have a knack for picking up processors in almost new condition, at yard sales for like $10.  I like to have two in my kitchen.

As you get into using raw foods more, then you will want to invest in a Vitamix, a really good, horse power blender, a dehydrator for making crackers etc, my favorite is an Excalibur, Spiroli and a coffee bean grinder.

Could that really be true?? Well, I have liked very much what I have seen in the first set of FREE videos, that I want to share with you. As, if this is all you do, it will add value to your life.

Aren’t You Worth a Better Life???

Conditions of People

For the last several weeks, I have been educating myself in an area, I hate to admit, but I knew little about……..finances.
Now, we all think we know things, but in reality most of us don’t, as 85% of Canadians are in debt, spending $1.45 for every $1 we earn and I can only imagine what the US numbers are. That to me states we really don’t know.
Debt is growing and continues to do so.
I’ve often said, advertising makes us believe that it’s never good enough, fast enough, new enough, big enough or we’re good enough…….so we’re always searching for something to make us feel better, even if only temporary.
We want to keep up with the Jones. By, the way, who the hell are the Jones anyways?? I could never figure that one out!!!
People are stressed more, losing their jobs, (ah job security…….I’ll talk more on that later!!), living pay cheque to pay cheque hoping things will change.
When?
How?
Definition of insanity? Keep doing what you’re doing and expecting things to be different.

Here’s a thought, stop, take a deep breath, start a budget, I know it’s not fun, but you have to know where your money is going, if there’s more month left at the end of the money, you might just be surprised on what you’re spending it. But, maybe you’re just not making enough…….there is alot to go around in this abundant universe, so
Create another stream of income.
Muiltiple streams of income is what is needed these days, unless of course you like working for the man, having them tell you how much you’re worth, when you work and when you can take time off!!
I know so many people that have ‘good’ jobs, live pretty simply and still can’t make ends meet………and yet they hope.

It’s time to wake up and do things differently!!
Aren’t you worth a better life??
