Ditch the Dieting

Ditch the Dieting

Forever!

www.jodiburke.com

Just look at the word ‘die t’

Doesn’t that say a lot on it’s own?

How about healthy eating? What about feeding the body? Nourishing the body? Providing the body with the right nutrients so that it thrives, you thrive as through that you will feel and look fabulous.

There is a BIG difference between eating and feeding the body.

Nourishing foods, depleting foods or chemical concoctions labelled as foods.

We are part of a group Transformation starting next week (or the week after if one chooses) to nourish our bodies, feed our bodies and cells, detox from a little over indulgence during the holidays – yes even I did I will admit!! It was fun, tasty and oh so part of the holidays yet I am also learning that it’s not a big part of my life any more – for me it’s so not worth feeling crappy. The little bit I did do I can feel the difference in my body – I guess I am way more sensitive since I am so much cleaner in my way of living.

Here are some questions maybe to ponder as there is always room for more people who want to take their health and eating to a higher level AND Ditch the Dieting bs thing

Are you eating to live or living to eat?

Do you have any food addictions? ( coffee, caffeine type drinks, sugar, white starchy things, junk foods etc)

Do you eat / snack in the evenings?

Do you have any extra weighty would like to release?

Are you feeling tired, sluggish – or just not your best?

Is your eyes or skin kind of blah (in other words not vibrant)?

Do you have mental fog, can’t make decisions type of thinking?

Just kind of feel blah, heavy like or a little blue?

Have any aches or pains in the body for no apparent reason?

These are signs from the body saying ‘hey wake up, I need a little attention. detoxing or some changes”.

I am not a fan of diets or New Years Resolutions – what I am a fan of is making a fresh start, creating health and eating real foods – as close to nature as possible and eating consciously. No you don’t have to become vegan or raw but how often are you eating meat and do you know where it’s coming form or how the animals were treated? Things like that.

I am also a firm believer in eating healthy does not have to be boring, confusing or difficult.

One of the reason’s I share Superfoods and the Purium 10 Day Transformation as they are foods, real foods (also live, organic and non-gmo), people do get good – great results as they are feeding the body at a deep (cellular level) and it’s fun waking people up!!

People are still learning what real foods are and once you experience it – it’s hard to go back!!

If interested please contact me for more information.

We are starting a group cleanse Jan 4 (yet you can start any time) and we are joining in with Purium so many of us will be doing it at the same time – love the support AND David Sandoval himself will be doing daily support calls – the founder of the Transformation and Purium – now how cool is that?

You also have my support via text and phone / Skype – as much as I love the health benefit and feeling and looking the best I can – without comparison to anyone else or today’s so called models, I also love helping people break free from addictive food eating, processed food eating and emotional eating.

When we nourish our bodies with real, healthy foods and superfoods, it’s one of the most powerful ways of saying I love you (me / my body) – not from ego just self love. Self love is part and a big part of overcoming emotional eating.

I’ve been there, I know – reach out – I am here!

2016 is going to be a fantastic year – as I am choosing to make each moment, hour, day, week and month count.

Healthy Food And Healthy Eating

Healthy Eating

Real Food

You are probably familiar with the Standard American Diet (SAD) or one or possibly many of the several hundred diets. Have you ever stopped and asked yourself or wonder why there are so many of them? The word alone should scare you off, lol.

What I am talking about for healthy eating is a lifestyle – it doesn’t have a stop and start date, it doesn’t consist of only a couple of foods, healthy products or eating a ton of a protein or carbs or counting how many calories or carbs or anything like that, it’s about real, whole foods, healthy foods – unprocessed, variety, tasty and nutritious.

A lot of people want to start eating better, but it may be confusing or overwhelming these days on really where to begin or what to believe. There are so many labels and choices that it seems the in thing to either be a ‘foodie’ or have some sort of label being raw, vegan, gluten free or…what about just plain healthy, natural, real food eating??
Who cares really? The best line I heard when someone asked if they were 100% raw – she replied “I’m a 100% raw except when I’m not”!

We really aren’t taught the truth about food and people are led to think that it is more convenient and healthy to eat what companies are telling us is ‘food’. Convenient, maybe, but it is not going to be the healthy choice in most cases. The best line I have heard recently is – “if it’s made in a plant – don’t eat it and if it comes from a plant -eat it’! Pretty simple isn’t it?

Hemp Hummus

There are approximately 180 000 species in the world and only 1 eats a processed cooked diet, the rest eat a natural raw diet yet raw and natural is consider radical and by some even not normal or unhealthy…

We have been programmed for example – fast food is considered at the drive thru or fast ‘ fake’ food as it’s well fast fake food. What about a bunch of cherry tomatoes, some kalamata olives, an avocado and some cucumber – now isn’t that fast food, I mean no preparing or cooking? See how we are easily programmed and not always for the best?

Even the so-called ‘Enriched’ foods are not natural. They are still man-made and synthetic, you are better off with the real deal. Think about it, why would you need to enrich your food with the nutrients that were leached out of it when it was processed in the first place? If you only took your food in its real state, there will be no need to enrich anything or read labels for that matter.

There is also more to healthy eating than following a set of rules. In fact, I think that there should be no rules other than following what is good for you. The trouble with things like SAD is that when we perceive that the advice we get is handed out by someone or some group we consider as experts, we tend to suspend our own judgment. That should never be the case.

What you should do instead is to listen to your body. Keep yourself as subjective as possible. Do what is best for yourself. The more real and natural you eat, the cleaner you are and the easier it gets and the better you feel. Adhering to certain guidelines can be very stressful and it creates unnecessary pressure on ourselves. Instead of worrying over not being able to meet certain standards in a meal plan, focus on getting real foods into your body, loving your body, appreciating the food and energy it is bringing to your body and eat without distractions like tv, computers, being on the phone, having arguments etc.
Go organic and raw whenever possible. Do your best to get the best quality foods that you can get – this includes your water and even spices and herbs and of course superfoods.

Healthy eating is going to vary from one person to another to some degree. I believe there is no one perfect way to eat that fits everyone – but since the rise of processed foods and fast foods so has obesity, diabetes, heart disease etc grown. Make your diet as healthy, real and natural as possible. Do what works for you. Doing that is going to give the body more of the right nutrition, enzymes, real vitamins and minerals and you will feel the difference. And avoid GMO’s as much as possible.

Healthy eating does not have to be hard, confusing, boring or time consuming, but it will take you making some changes and working towards a new way of eating – but aren’t you worth that? I think so!

Diets – YUCK!!

Diets – YUCK!!

Healthy Eating

Just google the word ‘diet’ and you will get a list of the best 32 diets.  Google different types of diets and you will get many more starting from the Zone diet, South beach probably a North beach one too, the GI diet, the Dash diet, the Mediterranean diet, the Flexitarian diet, the glycemic index diet and well I could go on…….

Diet according to wikipedia –

In nutritiondiet is the sum of food consumed by a person or other organism.[1] Dietary habits are the habitual decisions an individual or culture makes when choosing what foods to eat. The word diet often implies the use of specific intake of nutrition for health or weight-management reasons (with the two often being related).

I wonder how well these ‘diets’ work to have soooo many of them!! 🙂

Lets  look at the word – DIE-T  – interesting isn’t it?  It’s restrictive and not always in our best health interest.  Sure you could probably lose weight, many do, but what happens when you go back to eating the way you did that helped you put on the weight or even got you your health issues?  As we know many health conditions can be helped with proper and healthy eating.  If a diet really worked why are there so many of them?  I know we are all different and not always one thing works for everyone but I do believe in eating real food, nutrient dense food and a variety of food – for anyone.  it also sounds restrictive, can’t have and that creates issues in itself I will go into later on.

Here are a few suggestions if I can share….

Stop using the word ‘diet’ .  We shouldn’t really ever be on a ‘diet’, maybe a cleanse to detox, clear up health issues but dieting especially if you are suppose to eat all kinds of only a few foods, or just one type of food for days on end or having to measure everything or counting carbs, fats, sugars etc is a make work project that your energy could be better spent somewhere in my opinion.

What is cool about eating more whole, real foods, more live foods is the body can easily assimulate and digest it.  And many times you  won’t over eat and because the body is being fed properly you actually end up eating less.  Plus if it’s nutrient dense foods – many health benefits can surface.  The more raw foods you can add in as well is better on on’es health as well.

A way of eating should be a lifestyle not a diet in my opinion.  The more you can add in good and great nutrient dense, real, whole, live or organic (and non-gmo) foods the easier it is.  Maybe you are thinking you don’t want to give up such and such – I’m not saying that.  Sometimes it’s not what you have to or should give up but rather what can you add in or possibly do betteror how could you make a better choice and over time you may switch things out completely.

Here is an example – when I first started doing raw foods the smell of fresh baked bread – oh my – I still enjoyed it and especially when I could smell it fresh baked.  So if I was in a restaurant and they brought fresh baked bread well with lots of butter – yup but I would take a bite or two and savor it.  The interesting part is after doing this a few times I realized I didn’t really enjoy it.  Probably for two reasons – the emotional response of fresh baked bread actually took me back to earlier times when my grandfather taught me how to bake bread in his kitchen – fun times, good times – memories.  I also found the more I was cleaning up my way of eating to eat something like that felt like a brick in my stomach after eating it – there are only 2 more ingredients in bread then there are in glue (well home made anyways lol)  I still love the smell of fresh home baked bread – I don’t even consider eating it now – does not interest me.  So things can shift.

Maybe you like drinking pop (or soda for you Americans) maybe it’s diet soda – first switch back to regular pop – the body can deal with breaking down sugar but the diet stuff is all chemicals – your body doesn’t have a clue how to digest or utilize that!!  Then maybe after a bit switch to carbonated water with juice, then just juice (as we really want to cut down carbonation or not cut it out eventually) then maybe to half jucie half water and finally water – the best thing for your body – as we are over 70% water!!

Here are some suggestions to moving towards a healthier way of eating without feeling like you are restricting.

– aim for 50% fresh, natural, live and real foods at a meal

– drink more water after all we are 70% plus water – our bodies need water

– stay away from hydrogenated oils – the body doesn’t know how to digest or utilize these including margarine

– stay away from artificial sweetners again the body doesn’t know how to digest these

– stay away from low fat, fat free products – they are chemical sh*# storms really, but again the body dosn’t know how to digest these

– stay away from products that have wording on the ingredient labels that you can’t pronounce and have no clue what it is

– stay away from products that have a shelf life longer than your dogs life

– get sunshine every day (lol in Vancouver that can be very hard sometimes)

– get fresh air and exercise

– laugh more and spend your time with people who inspire and lift you up – stay away from drama and chaos

I believe that eating healthy is a good things but cutting out as much stress, drama, chaos, negativity is just as important!!

My Thoughts on Food

My Thoughts on Food

My Thoughts on Food

I thought I would come clean on why I stepped back from food and creating recipes and teaching more about raw foods etc

Besides there being so many food blogs, books, recipes, opinions, diets and classes out there – it has become a trend and almost a preoccupation.

I was at a New Years party where people were bragging about being foodies – nothing wrong with that but it seems like it’s the ‘in’ thing to do now – that wasn’t really why I got started.  It is also way too confusing for people, all the different studies, etc saying one week eat this then next week don’t, different blood types, different body types, some people do well on raw, others need meat and so on.

It also shifted for me the more I learned about energy, being at the effect of things, how we can really heal our own bodies, how powerful the mind is.  The little lies I learned when I was doing Superfood demo’s for a Superfood company – who also ended up being unethical in some of their dealings got me looking more at the food industry and not really wanting to be part of it.   I just recently learned that in Canada, for food to be organic – a farmer just has to say it is, nothing more.  Now to be come Certified – that is a different story and also costs a lot.  I got thinking about when I buy organic and pay more – is it really organic if it comes from Canada??  Please don’t get me wrong I am not bashing anyone or anything here – just sharing my experience – a lot was good.  I also spent a lot of time wondering, worrying, creating and thinking about food, what I should eat, shouldn’t eat, can’t eat, OMG I did eat and so on.

One day I decided to let it all go and it just felt so much lighter – so much in fact I knew I had to step back.

I also had a lot of questions about how we in North America saturate a good thing in small amounts ie soy. If we look at other cultures – food has been celebrated for many years and people have eaten many things and lived quite healthy without making a big deal about it.

It’s when we bring in the fast foods and processed crap that disease etc start.

Now it’s true – I still believe in healthier eating, keeping it simple, keeping it natural as much as possible and that so much of our food that is labeled ‘food’ in our grocery stores is just different chemical concoctions made up to think we are eating food and really just depriving the body of what it knows how to easily digest and utilize efficiently but I didn’t want my life wrapped around it any longer.

What I do choose to eat and not eat well works for me.  Each day is different and probably just like any one else that is being ‘normal’ I do the best I can – love my morning Americano’s, eat popcorn (ok -organic) with a good movie, have a weakness for good cheese, but also eat fresh or what is in season as much as possible.

Moderation, balance and real food that the body can digest – the chemical ones mess with so much of our systems, the body doesn’t know how to digest them properly and they leave us feeling hungry as the body really hasn’t been fed properly so we eat more – hence weight gain.

I haven’t even touched on emotional eating here.

Exercise – I get out every day with at least 2 good walks with my dog, then I mix it up – Yoga, Hot Yoga, Biking, Hiking, Dancing and that is about it – it is what works for me and what my body wants – I have also learned to listen to what my body wants and doesn’t and to stop forcing it or do things because I should – I do them because I enjoy them and like making them part of my daily living.

I used to train hard -run, aerobics, weights, biking and now it’s a slower softer pace – but I am happy.

This is where I am at in my life and my body and it seems happy and healthy – I am competing with no one and listening to what it wants to eat – and the more you do clean it up – well things like chips etc aren’t really that much of an interest or craving.

Keep Is Simple Silly – get the help where you need it, balance, moderation but no one way of eating is perfect for every body!!!

Love to hear what you think!

Diet

Have you ever really looked at that word and gave it some thought?

Diet………hmmm makes you wonder eh??

If you google diet, kinds of diets, type of diets……..OMG…..yet most of them are fads or we wouldn’t have so many of them.

Two things I have done to make my food experience better, well 3 but we’re going to talk about 2 here today and the third I’ll share shortly as they are all important I think.

One was to eliminate the word diet, as we know what word is in there and it’s restrictive.  When I restrict myself or tell myself I can’t or shouldn’t have that, well guess what?? You probably guess right!! I have the type of personality for the most part I don’t like to be told I can’t have something especially when it comes to food.  Now, I can choose not to want it or eat it which is totally different…..see what I mean?  There is no restriction but choice, big difference.

We all know inside it’s calories in calories out, the type of calories make a big difference.  If you are anything like me I don’t have time or care to count calories, just like texting I can’t keep track of how many give me unlimited please!!

Now that is not to say that is card blanche for go ahead eat anything and everything and lots of it, I just found it became easier and easier to let alot of unhealthy foods go and that need to overeat at times left too as I wasn’t denying myself anything. I gave myself permission to be.

When you clean up the way you eat, by eating healthier, whole foods, you don’t want those foods that have all the fat, calories and additives which are empty and nutritionally deprived.  Clean it up and get rid of the word ‘diet’, choose healthier eating, healthier living, healthier being or I’m eating for me……whatever works just stop using the word diet or I’m on a diet!!

The other thing I did along time ago, like before I had kids, was to throw out my scales.  Did I really need to know the number? Who cares?? I stopped looking at those numbers as we know how we feel in our bodies, in our clothes…..don’t we??  I used to weigh myself every day and alot of times not just once………talk about a mind f@%^*!!!!  Those numbers could mess with my head and make or break my day…..that is not the way it should be.

This time of the year my jeans get a little snugger, it’s winter, I’m not out as much I mean it’s dark by 4:30 here for a few months and I don’t do the gym thing really and that is how it works for me.  I didn’t say tight, I say snug. and I can live with that as I know it will come off shortly too once the spring is here.  We are like animals in some ways and need a little more fat in the cold months BUT I don’t need to see how much!! lol

Common sense here and doing things maybe differently.  Stop saying diet and if you find yourself weighing yourself often or you gt upset by the numbers on the scale, get rid of it.  Do you really need that type of anxiety??

Break the pattern……..make it a great and healthy day!!

JB

Diet vs Lifestyle

To me, lifestyle means a way of life, a way of living.

Diet, well, lets look at the first 3 letters DIE, need I say more??

I wonder why there are so many ‘diets’ out there? I wonder why each year new ones pop up, The South Beach Diet, The Atkins Diet, The 3 Apple a Day Diet, The 3 Hour Diet, The Beverly Hills Diet, The Cheater’s Diet, and I could go on. There is a list of about a gazillion names, well ok, maybe not that many but more than a few hundred and I’m not making the list up either!!

Eating healthy, for me, is about choices, choices I can make every day. It’s not about restriction, it’s about eating for optimal nutrition, it’s about feeling good, it’s about what works for me, it’s about listening to my body – what it wants and yes sometimes even just for fun.
Too often we are busy running around, grabbing anything on the go, we don’t even know if we really are hungry let alone what for. Lots of times, that is when the weight piles on. So, we then put ourselves on a ‘diet’.

Eating well or healthy should be a lifestyle, not I have to go on a ‘diet’ or Monday to Thursday. I starve myself those days and eat these things that I don’t even like so I can eat whatever and lots of it all weekend long. By Monday it’s like having a hangover sometimes and then only to have to go through it again next week.

Can you imagine if that pressure was taken off of you, how it would feel? Take a big, deep breath in right now and let go. Let go of the restrictions, the guilt, the pressure, the stress of the world of ‘dieting’. Take another deep breath in and let go and just sit for a minute, just a minute.

Doesn’t that feel better??

We already have enough on our plates (no pun intended!!) to have more pressure on ourselves. It shouldn’t be stressful or hard and certainly not any fun!

I leave you with 2 questions to ask yourself……….

Would you rather have a lifestyle way of eating (compared to a diet)?

and

If you fed your spirit, your soul, would you have a better relationship with food?

I know for me, it has made a huge difference in my life……..I threw away my scales a long time ago for starters!!!

Love to hear your thoughts!
