Real Food

You are probably familiar with the Standard American Diet (SAD) or one or possibly many of the several hundred diets. Have you ever stopped and asked yourself or wonder why there are so many of them? The word alone should scare you off, lol.

What I am talking about for healthy eating is a lifestyle – it doesn’t have a stop and start date, it doesn’t consist of only a couple of foods, healthy products or eating a ton of a protein or carbs or counting how many calories or carbs or anything like that, it’s about real, whole foods, healthy foods – unprocessed, variety, tasty and nutritious.

A lot of people want to start eating better, but it may be confusing or overwhelming these days on really where to begin or what to believe. There are so many labels and choices that it seems the in thing to either be a ‘foodie’ or have some sort of label being raw, vegan, gluten free or…what about just plain healthy, natural, real food eating??
Who cares really?The best line I heard when someone asked if they were 100% raw – she replied “I’m a 100% raw except when I’m not”!

We really aren’t taught the truth about food and people are led to think that it is more convenient and healthy to eat what companies are telling us is ‘food’. Convenient, maybe, but it is not going to be the healthy choice in most cases. The best line I have heard recently is – “if it’s made in a plant – don’t eat it and if it comes from a plant -eat it’! Pretty simple isn’t it?

Hemp Hummus

There are approximately 180 000 species in the world and only 1 eats a processed cooked diet, the rest eat a natural raw diet yet raw and natural is consider radical and by some even not normal or unhealthy…

We have been programmed for example – fast food is considered at the drive thru or fast ‘ fake’ food as it’s well fast fake food. What about a bunch of cherry tomatoes, some kalamata olives, an avocado and some cucumber – now isn’t that fast food, I mean no preparing or cooking? See how we are easily programmed and not always for the best?

Even the so-called ‘Enriched’ foods are not natural. They are still man-made and synthetic, you are better off with the real deal. Think about it, why would you need to enrich your food with the nutrients that were leached out of it when it was processed in the first place? If you only took your food in its real state, there will be no need to enrich anything or read labels for that matter.

There is also more to healthy eating than following a set of rules. In fact, I think that there should be no rules other than following what is good for you. The trouble with things like SAD is that when we perceive that the advice we get is handed out by someone or some group we consider as experts, we tend to suspend our own judgment. That should never be the case.

What you should do instead is to listen to your body. Keep yourself as subjective as possible. Do what is best for yourself. The more real and natural you eat, the cleaner you are and the easier it gets and the better you feel. Adhering to certain guidelines can be very stressful and it creates unnecessary pressure on ourselves. Instead of worrying over not being able to meet certain standards in a meal plan, focus on getting real foods into your body, loving your body, appreciating the food and energy it is bringing to your body and eat without distractions like tv, computers, being on the phone, having arguments etc.
Go organic and raw whenever possible. Do your best to get the best quality foods that you can get – this includes your water and even spices and herbs and of course superfoods.

Healthy eating is going to vary from one person to another to some degree. I believe there is no one perfect way to eat that fits everyone – but since the rise of processed foods and fast foods so has obesity, diabetes, heart disease etc grown. Make your diet as healthy, real and natural as possible. Do what works for you. Doing that is going to give the body more of the right nutrition, enzymes, real vitamins and minerals and you will feel the difference. And avoid GMO’s as much as possible.

Fresh Foods

Healthy eating does not have to be hard, confusing, boring or time consuming, but it will take you making some changes and working towards a new way of eating – but aren’t you worth that? I think so!

Olive Spread with Dandelion flax Crackers

A nice, light, tasty, vegan and raw spread!  Black olives (pits still in ) are raw (unless they come in a jar) .

This recipe started out like a tapenade but I took it further and I think tastier 🙂

Not only is this good on crackers but also through it in a romaine leaf  – still healthy and tasty.

In the hotter weather eating lighter I find I prefer doing and snacking more often – this makes it easy.

–  1/2 cup Almonds soaked for at least an hour (optional – soaking is optional, health wise it is better to soak the almonds even for several hours plus it softens them a bit, tight on time – you don’t have to soak them)

–  1 cup black Olives – pit removed

–  2 cloves Garlic

–  1 cup Parsley

– 5 – 6 Basil leaves

–  juice of 1/2 Lemon

–  2 tbsp cold pressed Olive oil

–  pinch Salt & Pepper

Throw all ingredients into processor and process and process.  I did not do it until it was fine – I left it kind of course  – process until desired consistency.

Dandelion flax Crackers

When I make raw crackers I love experimenting with flavours, so they usually never taste the same!! I also use what I have been juicing or have on hand.  I was juicing Dandelion leaves in the spring here as it’s good for detoxing the liver and I saved the pulp to make crackers with.  I did the recipe again as not only did I love them so did everyone who tasted them – no one believed it was with Dandelions but I think the spices I used added great flavor.

These are vegan and raw and were created in a dehydrator – in the oven could be done but at the lowest possible temperature and it may not be low enough to be raw.

 

–  2 cups ground Flax

–  11/2 cups Dandelion pulp (left over from juicing – if you don’t have a juicer you can always use a Vitamix or Blender – throw in the Dandelion leaves and some water and blend then strain it)

–  1 cup Water ( a little more may be needed – you want somewhat thick consistency so not to funny but not stick either – as you mix it together)

–  1 tsp Himalayan Salt

–  2 tsp toasted Cumin Seed (that has been ground to a powder – it’s used in Indian dishes)

–  Caraway seeds (optional)

Mix all together.  You can let it sit for a couple of hours or over night and have it a bit fermented, or you can spread it on the dehydrator sheets (with the teflon sheets so nothing falls through)

Spread evenly then score it into crackers the size you would like.

This is where I like to add a little more Caraway seed and sprinkle some coarse Sea salt but that is totally optional.

Dehydrate for 6 – 8 hours, flip the sheets over and remove the teflon sheets and dehydrate until you like the crispness – usually 2- 4 hours – I like crispy crackers so I do them longer – these times are just guidelines depending on the dehydrator, the size, the temp. so check in till you get what you like.  I find once I flip them I don’t need as much time on the second side.

Why Organic???

You are what you eat and your skin is the largest organ of the body, everything you eat makes a difference and everything you put on your skin gets absorbed into the bloodstream.  For me, if I am going to eat healthy& raw, I want it to be organic as often as possible, and I want to put healthy organic products on my skin as well.

WHY????

We already get exposed to enough toxic chemicals and if we have a chance to reduce that, why not??

Foods and products that are organic are not gentically modified (GMO), don’t have pesiticides, herbicides and other chemicals.  These chemcials are detrimental to your health and are usually cancer causing.

Organic foods and products reduces overall toxins in your body further increasing your health and vitality. They are more nutritious, safer, have more vitamins and minerals and are better tasting.

I find everytime I go to the store and try and find a safe, healthy or organic product, reading the labels is quite amusing to say the least!!  I don’t know what the guidelines are but to put on the labels nautral or organic and to find out they still have toxic chemcials in them is frustrating.

These are some foods that have high amounts of pesticides, growth hormones, antibiotics etc

– beef, chicken & pork

– dairy

– strawberries, raspberries and cherries

– apples and pears

– tomatoes

– spinach and salad greens

– peaches and nectarines

– coffee

– potatoes

– grapes (imported from Chile)

– celery

– peppers red and green

Organic may be more expensive, but for me, I feel it’s worth it.  A good way of getting fresh, organic and usally well priced produce is through your local organic farmer or at farmer’s markets.
