Spirulina Balls

One of the biggest things I am finding is the more Super Foods I have added into my way of eating (no not a ‘diet’) the less food I actually eat!!

It’s true!!

Why is that??

There is a BIG difference between eating and feeding the body today.  If you walked into your local grocery store, you will find shelves full of ‘food’ or products with a lable of ‘food’.  Many items in that store have little if any real nutritional value, so I ask you then, is it really food??

If the nutritional value it does have is created by man or a machine, does it count?  It depends on if the body recognizes it and digest or can utilizes it otherwise the answer is no.

Here are a couple of questions that can help answer that.

After eating :

–  Do you still feel hungry shortly after eating a meal (or a really good sized snack) even though your stomach is still full an it’s been less than an hour (even 2 hours)?

–  Do you feel tired and lethargic after eating?

–  Do you feel bloated, gassy or have indigestion?

–  Are you feeling tired most of the time or lethargic and craving sugar or caffeine products then having a big slump after an initial energy burst?

–  When you think of eating is everything you want, crave or think about comes in a box, packaged, canned or frozen?

–  Do you wake up tired, sluggish or achey and it takes a coffee (or several) to get you going?

These are just some of the side effects of not getting nutrition from the food you eat.

Another good question is if you think you can’t give up some of the food you do eat or are addicted to.  There is such a thing as food addiction.  In our society today it’s everywhere, we are inidated with fast food, processed food, food shows, food blogs etc everywhere, yet most of it lacks nutrition.

How do I know that?

Obesity, not just being little overweight but obese, diabetes, heart disease, cancer, food allergies, gluten intolerances, are just a few side effects that people are suffering with these days are at record highs.

We don’t know how good we can feel in our bodies or how good our bodies are suppose to feel as most of us are being ruled by our mouths and taste buds – but did you know food manufacturers have added in so many chemicals so that we do become addictive to processed foods?  Thirty years ago there were approximately 800 food additives, now there is over 10 000 and most have NOT been tested. Yet they get put in our ‘foods’.

Every mouthful moves us in a direction – either closer to health or further from it.

We do have choice – we get to choose what we buy and what we eat.  One of the things that I love about adding in Super foods is, not only are they nutrient dense, they feed my body so my body is nourished therefore I eat less food.  Now don’t get me wrong, I love to eat food, especially good tasting food, but when I feed my body real food, whole food, food that is nutrient dense, it actually needs less food.  I also feel healthier in so many ways!!

It’s a win win in so many ways.  It saves on my monthly food bill – yes it does!! It may seem more expensive at first but trust me it’s not, it’s like using those new light bulbs that cost 3 or 4 times as much – but lasts more than 10 times longer.  It has made me realize what good food actually tastes like and my food addictions – not just to certain foods but also to eating in general.  We seem to eat of joy and pleasure  or even pain more these days then actually eating for nourishment – and we wonder why obesity is at an all time high!!?

I am a lover of Super foods and use many in my way of eating.  I have been creating recipes adding them in, but will be expanding more on that and listing Super Foods that you too can add in.  There is a ton of info on the internet about Super Foods – no not broccoli or eggs or salmon, but greens, algae, hemp, mushrooms, roots that are becoming more common as we are waking up to what real foods are.

One of the best slogans I’ve heard is – ‘If it’s made in a plant – don’t eat it, if it comes from a plant – eat it!!  (of course please use caution as some plants grown in the wild can be poisonous depending on where you live!)

This is another quick and easy, tasty yet nutritious vegan, raw, gluten free recipe!!

Spirulina Balls

www.jodiburke.com

–  1 cup ground raw Almonds

–  16 Madjool Dates (approximately)

–  1 tsp Spirulina (Purium’s Spirulina)

–  1/4 tsp Himalayan Sea Salt

–  3 tbsp Activated Barley (Purium’s Activated Barley – you can also substitute Hemp seeds or Hemp Powder or a good source Vegan Protein Powder or even Cacao Powder to not have the green color)

–  2 tbsp raw Coconut Oil (Purium’s extra virgin Tropical Oil that is hand poured)

–  1 tbsp Chia seed

–  2 tbsp raw Cacao Nibs

Throw all ingredients into a food processor and process, add in

–  1/2 cup raw Almonds and process until all ingredients are well mixed and the almonds are still chunky.

Roll into 1 in balls and store in air tight container in the fridge.

This is easy and quick to make and is loaded with nutrition.  You will find you only need a couple of these (maybe 3 or 4 depending on your size :)) and it will keep you satisfied for a long time.

Please note – I have used and added in Purium product links – why?  I have found them to be the cleanest,  organic, live and non-gmo for some of the super foods.  I use these as I have found them to be the best for the greens and algae, so yes I do promote them.  If you have another brand that you love, then please feel free to use that.  If you don’t have any or are interested in trying Purium, then by all means please be my guest and ask me questions or take advantage of the $50 Gift Card towards your first purchase of Purium products – I know once you try them, you too will agree!!

Kale, Apple & Pecan Salad with Spirulina – Hemp Dressing

Kale, Apple & Pecan Salad with Spirulina – Hemp Dressing

www.jodiburke.com

Kale, Apple & Pecan Salad with Spirulina – Hemp Dressing

Sometimes we can take the simplest foods, combine them and come up with not only a tasty snack or meal but also one that is totally nutrient dense. This is totally a raw and vegan dish incorporating superfoods. The more greens in your way of eating the better!!! The more real foods – which are live foods – which aren’t man made or have their own commercial – are what you want to eat more of. I don’t care what the label says – organic, natural, gluten free etc – they are usually processed and unless the label says raw – it’s dead foods.
And to be clear – not that I am against dead foods – but most of us need more live foods and superfoods in our way of eating!!
If you have to buy packaged foods – try and make sure you read the labels with ingredients – you should be able to say and or know what all the ingredients are and better if it’s dehydrated so it’s still live or raw – meaning it still has real nutritional value and most importantly enzymes which are needed by the body!!

www.jodiburke.com
Salad
I used a mixture of organic Greens and Kale or you can use just Kale – I have tried it both ways and both are tasty!!

– 1 small box mixed organic Greens

– 1 bunch Kale (chopped or torn into pieces) and mixed in with Greens or on it’s own

– 1 – 2 Apples cut up in bite chunks

– 1/2 cup roasted or dehydrated Pecans

2 ways of making roasted or dehydrated Pecans – I usually use my stove top as I wait to the last minute I will be honest. When I am organized and think ahead it’s not a problem 🙂 I put in some Tamari or Braggs (approx 3 tbsp) into a pan on med – low heat and mix in Pecans, sometimes I add in Agave (approx 2 tbsp) for a little sweeter version.

Stir well, and let sit, stirring often until the Tamrai or Braggs starts drying – take off heat and let cool. You can cook this faster by using higher heat but you will also destroy the enzymes. Once fully cool down, add to salad. That is all I put in the salad – but don’t be afraid to add in more if you like – some veggies or herbs or………you aren’t limited!!!

Spirulina Hemp Dressing

I always keep my salad dressings simple if I even use one – yet sometimes I like to shake things up. This one was one of those that even my daughter liked!! Yes it is Green!! lol

– 1/4 cup cold pressed Olive Oil

– 1/2 juice of Lemon

– 1/4 cup Hemp Seeds

– 1 tsp Spirulina (Purium’s organic, live & non-Gmo)

– 1 tbsp raw Apple Cider Vinegar

– 3 tbsp Agave

– 1 clove Garlic

– pinch Himalayan Sea Salt

Throw all in a Vitamix, blender or hand blender until mixed well.

Pour onto salad. Keep rest in fridge in a glass bottle or air tight container.

Fed UP

Just came across this trailer and had to watch the documentary – I hope you do too as people are waking up, want the truth and need solutions – that is why I love what I do and get to share it!!

Healthy eating should not be so hard or confusing.

That’s also why I love Superfoods!!

Fed Up!! for more info.

Greens

Greens

They are tastier and easier than you think to eat!!

since being on the road there are a few things I am so grateful for!!

One is the preparing ahead of time and bringing some healthy foods / snacks with us as there was nothing and I mean NOTHING at any gas stations or stops to eat – yes there was a ton of junk or franken foods but NO REAL FOODS – how sad.

We even stopped by a grocery store in that had NO fresh food – their produce section was being fixed or redone – the whole thing – so nothing in that store was fresh or alive!!!

the other thing that has made travelling easy is our Purium products – yes I am definitely going to promote them here as not only are they alive, vegan ,organic and non-gmo when none of those things we could find, but also handy, dried (yes still live as they were dried at very low temperatures) but also convenient.

So instead of settling for the crap, fake processed foods on the shelves – we have been able to stick with Whole foods and Superfoods that are live and fresh – Purium and not as we planned ahead, more prepared, didn’t give into temptation, laziness, excuses plus we know how crappy, gassy and bloated we would feel eating anything but!!

its truly incredible when you really start feeding the body instead of just eating how good you can feel – most of us don’t know how good we can feel and its pretty amazing and keeps getting better!!!!

A quick and easy and oh my so tasty salad we threw together one night after attending the locals farmers market.

2015-02-18_0003

– fresh mustard greens

– fresh mixed sprouts

– toasted fresh pecans in coconut oil (usually I use Tamari for roasting / toasting nuts) this was

the first time I used Coconut oil and it tasted amazing!!

– chopped dried black olives

– Coconut cheese – yes coconut – it was yummy

– Spirulina (sprinkled on – yes Purium)

– very high quality cold pressed olive oil and balsamic vinegar lightly poured over the salad

We also created a side dish of Guacamole with herbs, lemon juice, himalayan salt, garlic and spirulina.

Easy, quick, tasty and nutrient dense and oh yeah real whole foods – eating healthy made easy!!

Here I am eating at Chocola Tree in Sedona Arizona – an amazing Raw / Vegan highly conscious, organic restaurant – all dressed in Green eating the Green Goddess salad (no I didn’t preplan it lol). Salad of romaine lettuce, kale, pulse, seaweed, cucumbers, avocados, sprouts and a little nut hummus – greens, tasty and nutrient dense!!

Raw Chocolate Clusters

My mom used to make this Chocolate treat at Christmas time that I and almost everyone who tries them, loved them.  I couldn’t find a replacement for all the ingredients as they weren’t the healthiest treat 🙂 but came close to it with this recipe for raw Chocolate Clusters allowing to have a sweet treat yet still healthy eating.  Another treat that you can’t tell is raw and still healthy – as it’s yummy!!

–  1 cup Raw Cacao Paste – melted in a double boiler over low heat

–  1 tbsp Coconut oil

–  3 tbsp raw Honey or Agave

Mix together until melted  – not too high temp – very low.  Once melted (stirring occasionally) then stir in

remaining ingredients.

–  1 cup chopped or slivered raw (or pieces) Almonds

–  1 cup raw Pumpkin seeds

–  3 tbsp Hemp Hearts

–  1 tbsp Maca (Superfood – optional)

–  1 tbsp Spirulina (optional – these Superfoods are optional but you can’t taste them and it just adds more nutritional value to a sweet treat – what better way to get more nutrient dense food into your body)

Raw Chocolate Clusters

Stir until well coated.  Then pour into a glass rectangle dish or drop by spoonful onto wax paper and let cool.

Best place to store is in fridge to keep solid and fresh (sometimes it may soften when kept out at room temp)

Eat and enjoy – and please feel free to share!!

How Much Raw Food is Enough?

How Much Raw Food is Enough?

www.jodiburke.com

Raw Foods

There is a lot of debate surrounding this subject. Some people say that you should go 100%. Others disagree. There are those who say that the only way to get the best from raw food is if you take nothing else but it. Other people say that a diverse diet composed of 50% to 70% raw food will do just fine.

Many things are open to debate in the raw food world. Take cacao for example, some people advocate its use and say that it is the answer to your chocolate cravings. Then again, there are those who say it’s toxic and that it’s better to stay away from it.

Whether you take cacao or not depends on your own decision and whom you listen to. The same thing goes for how little or how much your diet is composed of raw food.

I personally believe that there are no rules to what percentage of raw food you should be taking. However, if there is anything you should be listening to, it’s your body.  We are all different, we are all unique and there is NO one perfect way for everyone.

www.jodiburke.com

Raw Foods

If your body is telling you that it can take more and that you can benefit from increasing your raw food intake, then go ahead. There are people who do well with 100% raw food diet. They see a great deal of improvement in their health from doing so. Many see it as a lifestyle, one that they cannot live without. It has become who they are and they cannot see anything other than taking it 100%.  AND chances are they live somewhere warm to hot and it’s easy to get fresh, raw (and probably totally organic) foods and its easier on the body when and where one is as far as warm weather is concerned!

On the other hand, some people benefit better from having a more diverse diet. It could be because their bodies cannot cope with some of the constraints of an all-raw food diet plan. Time and accessibility may also be an issue.

If you are new to raw food and if you are wondering how much of it you should take, it is advised that you should only take the amounts that you are comfortable with. You can start with just a meal or two a day for a few days a week, or start the day with a green smoothie or substituting salads instead of fries. Some people need to ease into more- make little changes daily and build on it – don’t overwhelm yourself.

This is NOT a diet and should not appear to be restrictive – this IS a lifestyle – and one that will take you more in alignment with total health.

Be sure to listen to how your body is reacting to your new diet. Take your energy levels into consideration. Figure out if you are getting a boost in your energy or if its making you feel bogged down.

Over time, your body will change and adjust. Soon, you may be able to live with a diet of up to 80% raw food. You may even be able to accommodate 100% on days.

The more clean foods you eat – even whole foods and or superfoods – the less dead, processed foods you will and your body will actually want or crave.

It’s better to have more real, natural food in your way of eating than not!  That is always the best choice over man made, processed, synthetic or chemical filled so called ‘food’s.  Think about that for a minute – what we now call food that was not around 20, 30 or 50 years ago

And now we have way more health problems…….it’s not rocket science!

Here’s a thought that may help you in choosing food – if it comes from a field, farm or forest choose it (with some exceptions of course like some mushrooms) and if it comes from a factory – stay away!!

www.jodiburke.com

Raw Foods

Adjust your raw food intake based on how your body is reacting to it. It is your best compass and the best way of finding out how much raw food is right for you. Keep things as natural as possible. Even if you do not go for 100% raw food, ensure that you still make healthy choices. Organic food items  AND NON-GMO will work well.

Don’t be so hard on yourself when it comes to making this decision. Keep in mind that you should always listen to your body. There are no fixed rules except nurturing and nourishment. Do what is best for you and the benefits are going to follow.

Thanks for stopping by and please feel free to share this!!

Here’s to YOUR Health and an amazing day!!

Black Bean Salsa

Black Bean Salsa

This is a Vegan recipe because of the Black Beans – but still has fresh yummy veggies.  The best part is you can make it as hot as you like it!!  It’s a basic recipe – but just to show you you can still get in fresh veggies easily  – you can always sprinkle on some superfoods too if you choose like hemp or spirulina for instance.

This time of the year especially when it gets quite chilly outside which it is now – I like to add in a few things to help keep me warmer – lentils, quinoa spices etc

www.jodiburke.com

Black Bean Salsa

This is a great recipe to make a little extra so you can  use it as a dip for raw crackers, natcho chips (yes they even have non-gmo ones and ones made without corn which are tasty!) side dish or even as a light salad for lunch!!  I use Organic whenever possible – if that is not an option – always soak your veggies in the sink with water and some white vinegar for at least 15 mins – apparently it helps to remove some of the outside crap.

www.jodiburke.com

–   6 smaller sized Red / Yellow / Orange Peppers chopped

–  2 Green Onions cut in half and thinly sliced

–  1/2 cup finely chopped Cilantro (if you are not a Cilantro lover use Parsley instead)

–  1 clove Garlic minced

–  1 juice of Lime (or Lemon)

–  1 hot Pepper or your choice finely chopped – optional (make sure to wash your hands well after chopping the pepper)

–  1 can Black Beans well drained and rinsed

Stir together all ingredients.  You can eat it right away, I find if I let it sit  for a little bit or over night the flavors get greatly enhanced.

Enjoy and please feel free to share!!

Raw Superfoods Chocolate

Who says eating healthy has to be boring or all just veggies??

I truly believe that things in moderation and of course the healthier versions are always better options!!

Raw cacao before highly processed and cooked (ie all our chocolate bars etc that we can buy at check outs or in grocery stores) have no nutritional value what so ever and have a ton of processed white sugar – something that brings no nutritional value to the body and literally takes from the body as well!

It’s incredible too when you can sneak in superfoods  – tasty yet healthy and nutritious like none other!!

There are healthy alternatives – I hope you experiment with the recipe and create what truly tantalizes your taste buds or just enjoy as is!!

Jodi

–         ½ cup raw Cacao Butter

–         ¼ cup raw Cacao Powder

–         1 tbsp Spirulina

–         1 tbsp Rice Bran Solubles (optional – Purium)

–         ½ tsp Cinnamon

–         1tsp Vanilla

–         ¼ cup Hemp

–         ¼ cup Agave (or Honey)

Raw Superfoods Chocolate

Melt the Cacao Butter over a double boiler on low heat.

Once melted stir in remaining ingredients and mix well until all is dissolved and smooth

Pour into chocolate molds or into a glass square baking dish and store in fridge for best results (may soften if out at room temp) and to keep longer.

Raw Superfoods Chocolate gives you the chance to enjoy sweets without the guilt. It’s really a healthy way to savor the goodness of chocolates.

Spirulina Chips

A little treat that is tasty, nutritious and easy to make.  Sneaking in Superfoods to make it even more nutritious and of course gives it that green color. Great treat to stick to eating healthy and adding in more raw foods to nourish the body – and it’s satisfies your sweet tooth in a good way!!

Spirulina Chips

–  11/2 cups Sesame Seeds soaked in water for a couple of hours minimum and drained

–  3 Bananas

–  1 tsp Vanilla

–  11/2tsp Spirulina

Optional – if you don’t want to have the green color add in some raw Cocoa and it will be a dark brown color instead.

Throw all ingredients into the processor except for the Sesame seeds, process until well mixed.  Stir in Sesame seeds and mix well.

Drop onto dehydrator sheets in small cookies size.

Dehydrate overnight approx or until the crispness that you desire ( I don’t like the chips too soft – I enjoy them kind of crispy so I dehydrate them a bit longer but you can have soft chips if your prefer just dehydrate them less – approx 8 – 10 hours)

If you don’t have a dehydrator you can still make the chips, just use a very low temp on your oven and place them on a greased cookie sheet and bake until desired crispness.

Enjoy!!

Healthy Food And Healthy Eating

Healthy Eating

www.jodiburke.com

Real Food

You are probably familiar with the Standard American Diet (SAD) or one or possibly many of the several hundred diets. Have you ever stopped and asked yourself or wonder why there are so many of them? The word alone should scare you off, lol.

What I am talking about for healthy eating is a lifestyle – it doesn’t have a stop and start date, it doesn’t consist of only a couple of foods, healthy products or eating a ton of a protein or carbs or counting how many calories or carbs or anything like that, it’s about real, whole foods, healthy foods – unprocessed, variety, tasty and nutritious.

A lot of people want to start eating better, but it may be confusing or overwhelming these days on really where to begin or what to believe. There are so many labels and choices that it seems the in thing to either be a ‘foodie’ or have some sort of label being raw, vegan, gluten free or…what about just plain healthy, natural, real food eating??
Who cares really? The best line I heard when someone asked if they were 100% raw – she replied “I’m a 100% raw except when I’m not”!

We really aren’t taught the truth about food and people are led to think that it is more convenient and healthy to eat what companies are telling us is ‘food’. Convenient, maybe, but it is not going to be the healthy choice in most cases. The best line I have heard recently is – “if it’s made in a plant – don’t eat it and if it comes from a plant -eat it’! Pretty simple isn’t it?

www.jodiburke.com

Hemp Hummus

There are approximately 180 000 species in the world and only 1 eats a processed cooked diet, the rest eat a natural raw diet yet raw and natural is consider radical and by some even not normal or unhealthy…

We have been programmed for example – fast food is considered at the drive thru or fast ‘ fake’ food as it’s well fast fake food. What about a bunch of cherry tomatoes, some kalamata olives, an avocado and some cucumber – now isn’t that fast food, I mean no preparing or cooking? See how we are easily programmed and not always for the best?

Even the so-called ‘Enriched’ foods are not natural. They are still man-made and synthetic, you are better off with the real deal. Think about it, why would you need to enrich your food with the nutrients that were leached out of it when it was processed in the first place? If you only took your food in its real state, there will be no need to enrich anything or read labels for that matter.

There is also more to healthy eating than following a set of rules. In fact, I think that there should be no rules other than following what is good for you. The trouble with things like SAD is that when we perceive that the advice we get is handed out by someone or some group we consider as experts, we tend to suspend our own judgment. That should never be the case.

What you should do instead is to listen to your body. Keep yourself as subjective as possible. Do what is best for yourself. The more real and natural you eat, the cleaner you are and the easier it gets and the better you feel. Adhering to certain guidelines can be very stressful and it creates unnecessary pressure on ourselves. Instead of worrying over not being able to meet certain standards in a meal plan, focus on getting real foods into your body, loving your body, appreciating the food and energy it is bringing to your body and eat without distractions like tv, computers, being on the phone, having arguments etc.
Go organic and raw whenever possible. Do your best to get the best quality foods that you can get – this includes your water and even spices and herbs and of course superfoods.

Healthy eating is going to vary from one person to another to some degree. I believe there is no one perfect way to eat that fits everyone – but since the rise of processed foods and fast foods so has obesity, diabetes, heart disease etc grown. Make your diet as healthy, real and natural as possible. Do what works for you. Doing that is going to give the body more of the right nutrition, enzymes, real vitamins and minerals and you will feel the difference. And avoid GMO’s as much as possible.

Healthy eating does not have to be hard, confusing, boring or time consuming, but it will take you making some changes and working towards a new way of eating – but aren’t you worth that? I think so!

Healthy Eating Made Easy

I will admit – I put my head in the same for quite awhile as life is busy and there is so much information out there on what to eat, not eat, what’s really healthy or natural and so on that it can be overwhelming – or so I thought.  Now GMO’s too? Seriously?

GMO’s have been around for about 30 years – so it’s nothing new BUT we do need to educate ourselves and if you take the time and watch the 17 minute trailer you will know why!

We are on a mission to educate and share – eating natural, real whole foods , healthy eating should be easy – we should  NOT be science experiments especially our kids – so I highly urge you to at least watch the trailer and decide for yourself!
